The Medieval Woman It is widely thought that the Medieval Ages were a society dominated by males. New research has shown this to be untrue and has uncovered many key roles for women in the early and Medieval Ages.
Primarily women held positions in local markets as seamstresses, dyers, weavers, farmers and domestic servants but though today's standards may frown upon these positions, in the Medieval Ages they were quite prominent. At one point clothing was only a luxury afforded by the middle and upper classes, therefore those who possessed the skills to craft it were much in demand. Women also served various religious orders as nuns, sisters, priestesses and healers. In the Celtic society of ancient Europe, the woman was entitled to all holdings of a marriage upon divorce. Celtic women such as Boudica and Cartamandua also arose to high levels of leadership and even repelled the early Roman invasions. In nobility and monarcy a queen or princess held responsibilities equal to the male king or prince. It wasn't until later though, toward the end of the 13th Century that women began to appear on battlefields as fighters. |
